Ikebana Vase Class
Brad will instruct students on how to turn an Ikebana Vase. So what is that? In general,
Ikebana refers to the Japanese art of flower arranging. Unlike standard vases that hold
bunches of flowers, an ikebana flower vase focuses on structure and negative space. It’s
typically shallower and uses a flower “frog” to hold stems upright. For this project, the frog is a
metal insert fit into a recess in the turned vase. Students will be making a fairly basic form that
is suitable for novice turners. More advanced turners can embellish the basic form in both
decorative and functional ways (such as adding “feet” to the base).
All materials will be provided including wood and the frog inserts. The material fee for this class
will be $25. Club members pay a $60 registration fee, for a total of $85. Non-members pay a
total of $115. The extra $30 for non members applies to a calendar year membership in
OPCAAW (see below for link to become a member in advance). Your membership assures that
the clubs insurance policy covers you during the class.
We can always use assistants to help with setup, cleanup and students.
