The May meeting of OPCAAW will feature a demonstration by Ellensburg turner Don Derry.
A woodworker for more than 35 years, Don made everything from fine cabinetry to rock'n'roll guitars before turning to wood turning in 1993. While attending the 1994 AAW Symposium, he noted that the work exhibited in the instant gallery lacked vibrant color and optical quality finishing. In the ensuing years, Don developed a process for coloring wood and creating a quality finish that often makes people mistake his work for art glass.
Don uses industrial paint pigments and aniline dyes to color his pieces, most often made from Chinese elm. The pigments are rubbed into the wood, which is then sanded. The color is sometimes enhanced with airbrushing. He then sprays on 7 to 10 coats of water white lacquer and uses a six-step hand polishing process to make the surface optically perfect.
Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the business meeting starting at 6:30.
There will be announcements, Show & Tell and the wood auction before the demonstration begins.
This may be a live demonstration or a remote demonstration via Zoom, depending on COVID protocols.
