Regular Meeting - Ed Pretty: Using Bow Ties to Patch Cracked Wood

    April 27, 2022

The April meeting of OPCAAW will feature a demonstration by British Columbia woodturner Ed Pretty.

Ed has been a turner since a very young age. He learned from his father, a traditional craftsman turner, and later from a variety of demonstrators who visited the Greater Vancouver Woodturners club. Ed does commercial production turning for some regular clients and occasional one-ff jobs for local furniture makers. He also does artistic turning and his pieces can be seen at the Circle Craft Gallery on Granville Island in Vancouver, B.C.

He also teaches and has created a variety of interactive remote demonstrations as the COVID pandemic precluded travel for live demonstrations.

Tonights demo will be about using bowtie patches to repair cracked wood. Bowtie patches are also known as "Dutchman," "Dovetail," or "Pewa" patches. The demo involves how to make a pattern for routing the recess for the patch, how to route the recess, how to create the patch itself and how to fit the patch.

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the business meeting starting at 6:30. Show & Tell and the Wood Auction to follow.

This is a live, in-person meeting with a remote demonstrator via Zoom. All 2022 OPCAAW members will receive an invitation and link to the Zoom presentation if you wish to attend online.
