Regular Meeting - Simon Begg: German Rings

February 23, 2022

The regular monthly meeting of OPCAAW will feature a demonstration  by Australian woodturner Simon Begg.

Simon is a young woodturner who came to the craft after completing a cabinetmaking apprenticeship after high school. He became a professional woodturner in 2016, and after teaching at the Turnfest Clinic in 2018, he became a headline demonstrator. He was scheduled to demonstrate at the 2020 AAW National Symposium that was canceled due to COVID.

Simon has become known for German ring turning (reifendrehen), in which a turned piece is produced so that when it's cut as a cross section, the profile creates a specific shape. Here's an example of a German ring made to create a hummingbird profile:

His demonstration is bound to explore some new techniques for us.

Simon's will be a remote video demonstration that will be available for in-person attendees at the Seventh Day Adventist School and also for members who wish to participate from home via Zoom.

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the business meeting starting at 6:30.

There will be announcements, Show & Tell and the wood auction before the demonstration begins.
