Class- Thin Walled Vessels and Piercing -Jim Leary

About this event

Jim will instruct the class on turning a small thin wall vessel and then discuss and show piercing techniques, tools and design options to enhance your turnings with piercing.

This class is
not a beginner class. Participants should be familiar with end grain turning, basic spindle turning and drilling on the lathe. Bring your lunch, a wood turner’s smock or tight fitting sweat shirt, eye protection, a dust mask and comfortable non-slip shoes. If you have a Dremel style tool and piercing bits bring them. It is recommended that you purchase a Dremel engraving bit #111, 112 or 113 before the class. You should also bring a soft pencil, a ruler (or tape measure),spring calipers and an Optivisor or similar hands-off magnifier. If you have a portable high powered LED light, it will be helpful in turning the thin vessel. The class is intended to get you started in your exploration of piercing as an embellishment and not to produce a museum piece.

Other possible piercing tools include: mini air driven die grinders, air driven dental tools (like the NSK), Foredom flexible shaft tools, and micro motor tools.

The class will be at the West Side Improvement Club, Bremerton WA, starting 9 am (8 am setup) and ending 4 pm, with an hour for lunch.

There is a $10 materials fee for this class on top of the registration fee. Club members pay a $60 registration fee, for a total of $70. Non-members pay a total of $100.00.
