Regular Meeting - Jim Leary: Small Musical Instruments for Children

    October 31, 2018

The regular monthly meeting of OPCAAW features a demonstration by 15-year OPCAAW member Jim Leary. Jim will show us how he makes small musical instruments for children – some of which could be hung as a tree ornament if you wish. Jim has 7 grandchildren and 34 nieces and nephews, and has found a number of ways over the years to entertain them using his turning skills.

Jim turned to carving and turning as an escape from high-stress work as an architect designing hospitals and large retail commercial buildings. Jim, one of the club's mentors, did production bowl-turning for Williams Sonoma for awhile, turning up to 400 bowls per year. His specialties now are architectural restoration – turning to order for contractors – and antique clock restoration, which requires turning, carving and veneering skills.

October's meeting also will feature announcements, Show and Tell and the wood auction. Members will also have access to our library and to sandpaper and CA glue sales.

Gathering starts at 6 p.m. Announcements begin at 6:30.
