Eggs have historically been a symbol of hope and new life.  For many, they just feel amazing in your hand and allow the enjoyment of the wood’s features from all angles.

The class will use a spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge, and negative-rake scraper, an egg pattern jig, and a four-jaw chuck.  Wood for two eggs and two jam chucks will be provided.  Participants will turn the basic egg shape with the spindle held in a four-jaw chuck and complete the eggs after creating their own jam chuck.

If time permits, we will talk about turning eggs with a skew, do a brief demonstration and practice.

Class runs from 9am to 4pm with a one-hour break for lunch at noon.  Setup is at 8am come early to help setup if you can.

    Class: Turning a Wooden Sphere-Larry Lemon -March 24, 2024

Turned wooden spheres hold a certain fascination. They demand to be picked up and rolled in the hand, they show off the figure of the timber and they also hold a mystery to turners and non-turners alike: just how do you turn this perfectly symmetrical shape without marking it? It’s actually not that difficult to do, but there are several stages involved. The method I will teach in this class is the simplest way that I have found, but it is by no means the only way. I’ve seen lots of variations, some involve some very careful marking out, some involve some mathematical formulae or the use of jigs. The beauty of the way I do it is that it is pretty much foolproof!

We will turn a blank into a cylinder, layout for the sphere and start turning the sphere.

We will also turn cup centers to hold the sphere for removing the end nibs and sanding.

Class starts at 9am (setup at 8am), lunch 12 to 1pm and cleanup at 4pm.
