Class: Tops for the Kitsap County Fair

    March 26, 2023

The March class sponsored by OPCAAW will be an open Sawdust Session on turning tops.

The club demonstrates every year at the Kitsap County Fair and we turn tops to give away to children who visit our booth. Getting enough tops turned for the fair is a year-long process. Even though the fair isn't until August, we need to be turning tops now to assure that we have enough to hand out.

We will have several instructors at the class to show anyone who hasn’t turned a top different methods to get the same end result: a top for a kid to play with.

Even if you already know how to make tops, you are welcome to join us and help build up inventory for the fair.

This class is free. No signup is necessary.

Regular Meeting - Ken Conte: Levitating Spheres

    March 29, 2023

The March meeting of OPCAAW will feature a demonstration by Ken Conte on how to create a Levitating Sphere.

An Olympia-area resident, Ken Conte took up woodturning in 2008 and has been a member of the American Association of Woodturning and the Woodturners of Olympia since then. He has served on the Board of the Woodturners of Olympia since 2008 and was club president from 2014-2018. He is retired after a 35-year career in Washington State government.

Ken wrote an article on how to create a levitating sphere for the August 2022 issue of American Woodturner. His demonstration will bring that article to life and show how he uses electro magnets embedded in his turnings to create wood sculptures that hand in mid-air.

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the business meeting starting at 6:30.

There will be announcements, Show & Tell and the wood auction before the demonstration.

Members will have the ability to attend virtually via Zoom. A link to the Zoom session will be sent out a few days before the meeting.
